What It Means to Serve When You Feel Unqualified

Girl extending her hand to help, representing serving others through God’s strength even when feeling unqualified.

I’ll be honest, I’ve wrestled with feelings of not being “enough” more times than I can count. Not wise enough. Not spiritual enough. Not bold enough. Not qualified enough to serve God. Maybe you’ve been there too, feeling like someone else is more gifted, more outgoing, more ready to step into what God is calling you to do. But here’s what I’m learning (and still learning): God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

I felt small BUT GOD called me anyway. There was a season when I felt God nudging me to encourage others through writing and sharing my faith. It was terrifying. I questioned everything: “What if no one reads it?” “What if I say the wrong thing?” “Who am I to talk about God?” I wasn’t a pastor. I didn’t have a theology degree. I wasn’t some polished influencer. I was just someone trying to obey in the middle of laundry, doubt, and an ever-growing to-do list.

But here’s the beautiful truth God whispered back: “You don’t need to be perfect to be used, you just need to be willing.” God uses imperfect people, on purpose. When I look at Scripture, I see a pattern: God repeatedly chooses the unexpected. Moses said he couldn’t speak well, yet God made him a leader. Gideon was hiding in fear, God called him “mighty warrior.” Mary was a teenage girl and God gave her Jesus. Peter was impulsive and messy but Jesus built the church on his confession.

Every one of them could’ve said, “I’m not qualified.” And in human terms, they weren’t. BUT GOD looked at their hearts, not their résumés. The shift from “I Can’t” to “God Can”. Serving God when you feel unqualified is not about being the strongest, smartest, or most confident. It’s about saying “Lord, I have weakness but I also have a willing heart.” And that’s enough. God fills in our gaps. He strengthens our shaky hands. He teaches as we go. He turns our “not enough” into more than enough by His Spirit.

A quiet yes still echoes in heaven. You don’t have to preach a sermon to serve God. You don’t need a microphone or a ministry title. Serving looks like praying for a friend, sharing a bible verse on social media, listening without rushing to fix, encouraging someone who’s weary, being faithful in what seems small. That quiet yes? It echoes in eternity.

He’s not looking for perfect, just willing. If you feel unqualified today, you’re in good company. So, did I. So do many. But that feeling? It doesn’t disqualify you, it humbles you, and humility is the very soil God loves to plant in. Keep showing up. Keep saying yes. Keep trusting that God will meet you where your confidence ends and His grace begins. Lord, I may feel small, but I’m available. Use me in Your way, for Your glory. Amen. Have you ever felt unqualified to serve God? What helped you keep going? Share your story in the comments, someone else may need it.
